WORCESTER, MA — With the headquarters of the Cannabis Control Commission and a cluster of dispensaries, Worcester is seen as the hub of the Massachusetts cannabis industry — and now the city may be one of the best places to celebrate the 4/20 marijuana holiday this year.
The recreational dispensary Mayflower will host a 4/20 festival this weekend to recognize the holiday, which stems from a secret smoking club formed by California high schoolers 50 years ago.
Massachusetts dispensaries don’t typically go all-out for the holiday, largely due to a state law does not allow recreational dispensaries to offer discounts (although medical marijuana can be discounted).
In Colorado this year for example, everyone from Willie Nelson to former Denver Bronco running back Reuben Droughns will be out celebrating with discounts, concerts and free-food giveaways.
Mayflower won’t be offering any discounts, per state law. But the dispensary’s celebration will feature different vendors, Worcester’s Dogfather gourmet hot dog truck and a caricature artist who will draw shoppers with their favorite marijuana plant.
Also for 4/20, Worcester’s Resinate dispensary is offering special marijuana strains boasting “30 percent total active compounds” in a banana lemon flavor. Cultivate, with locations in Leicester and Framingham, is beckoning consumers to sign up for its text message club to partake in holiday deals. Good Chemistry, Worcester’s first recreational store, will begin releasing a series of unique cannabis strains beginning Friday that the company calls “small batch exotics.”
According to lore, the 4/20 holiday began in 1971, when a group of high schoolers at San Rafael High School near San Francisco went searching for a secret marijuana garden. The group, called “The Waldos,” would meet at 4:20 p.m. to smoke, according to the cannabis news site Leafly.
The Mayflower event will run noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the 645 Park Ave. store.
